How to Make a Swivel Wheel Trailer (Plans, Kits, Assembly)

How to Make a Swivel Wheel Trailer (Plans, Kits, Assembly)Adding a swivel wheel trailer is not always adding a second trailer. In some states that do not allow double tows, they classify these additions as extensions. This classification makes them street legal in many states and it allows you to bring your toys along on your vacation. The best place we saw any plans for a swivel wheel trailer was Pinterest. The trailer Parts Outlet has lots of plans and blueprints but none were for this model of extension. You may need to contact the companies that make these extensions to see if they have plans available. To learn more about swivel wheel trailers just continue to read our article. It explores this topic so you can make your own or find a good shop that builds quality extensions. They are not classified as trailers in some states and the term extension may facilitate your search. Making a Swivel Wheel Trailer 101 What is a Swivel Wheel Trailer? While the word trailer is used in their labeling, these items do not attach to your 5th wheel in the traditional trailer method. There is no real ball and hitch to connect. Instead, there is an attachment mechanism that goes on the rear bumper of your 5th wheel to secure the trailer to that 5th wheel. The swivel wheel trailer is called an extension in some states and that is basically what it is. The device adds a little more room so you can put your toys on them and bring them on vacation with you.The wheels are not fixed but turn in the direction you need to go in, making backing up a snap. They follow the 5th wheel directly and do not turn in the opposite direction. This makes sure you can get your trailer in the right spot easily. To make a long explanation short, these swivel wheel trailers are mini toy haulers with a limited weight capacity. You can get them in single-wheel models or dual-wheel models.Which one you get will depend on your budget and the type of toy you are hauling. It will also depend on the design you want. Some come with fencing while others come with tie-down points to secure your items. How do You Make a Swivel Hitch? If you have welding and some engineering experience, then this should not be a difficult project. The key is to make the plates round so that they will slide easier when you tilt your motorcycle.Inside the attachment, you place a bolt and two nuts that do not tighten or loosen when you make your turns. They simply secure the trailer in place and allow it to rotate as you move. There is some welding involved plus you will need to drill some bolts into the assembly to attach it to your traditional hitch, minus the ball. You can make the rotating switch adjustable if you want to.There is a lot of freedom in this design to add your own tweaks to make it fit your situation. To cut your costs, you should look for scrap metal to use. Some inventors used aluminum to help keep the weight off. There is also a way to attach this device to a traditional hitch. It uses the same nut and bolt assembly that allows for rotation without loosening or tightening. The plates for this option should be round as well and well lubricated.Swivel Wheel Trailer Plans This may be something that is not easy to find. We checked a couple of websites that offer plans for their different trailer models but none of them had any plans for a swivel wheel trailer. We even tried using the word extension but there was no success there either. Most companies that make swivel wheel trailers may not want their plans advertised or sold to the general public. If they were, they would lose money because people would build their own.You can always ask the different companies if they…

Or does anybody have a swivel wheel trailer I can get some good pictures of? I’m a pipefitter/welder by trade and can build one, just interested in how they designed the hitching and the ability to lift up and out of the way when not in use. I’ll be traveling to Iowa from Texas sometime this year and would like to take my golf cart on the back of my 377RLBH without breaking out $2k… It’s got to be less than a thousand dollars worth of material. Thanks in advance! __________________ 2017 North Point 377RLBH 2011 Silverado 2500HD 6.6L   04-10-2017, 01:58 PM   #2 Senior Member   Join Date: May 2015 Location: Campbell Hall Posts: 2,835 “Swivel Wheel” and “Trailer” strike me as a contradiction. I know I would want the safety of fixed wheels on anything I’m towing down the road at double-nickels or better. I use 3-point implements routinely to mow and keep the dirt road and driveways pleasant. Those implements require casters at the rear because of the way they hitch to the tractor. What you are proposing would require a fixed attachment to the tow vehicle. The trailer’s tongue would have to slide into the receiver with no possibility of left-right movement at the attaching point. But you would still have to provide up-and-down flexibility so that the rig wont break when traveling on non-level ground. I guess there is a good reason that there are plenty of small utility trailers with a regular ball coupler and fixed axle? __________________ TT 2015 19RD “TheJayco” TV 2003 F-350 “Montblanc” – Housebroken chore truck Sitting in The Cheap Seats. I wasn’t using it anymore..1090 lb. Capacity 40-1/2 in x 48 in Utility Trailer Less than 300 bucks for the trailer a nice wood top and some anchor points. I towed extra camping gear on it when we had our SUV. Mike makes some good points. The little trailer on that picture would scare the @@#$ out of me if I saw it on the interstate. Those back wheels would be flipping around like fish out of water wouldn’t they? __________________ 2016 27BHS Elite 2012 F-150 EcoBoost / Max Tow (Sold) 2017 ‘Blue Jeans’ 6.2 F-250 Lariat 4.3 gears.   04-10-2017, 02:21 PM   #4 Member   Join Date: Sep 2016 Location: Fairfield Posts: 92 Quote: Originally Posted by mike837go “Swivel Wheel” and “Trailer” strike me as a contradiction. I built this one like a lowboy trailer so it would be easy to get my Harley on and off. It can also be used for a golf cart or ATV. It uses 12″ wheels instead of 8″ and it’s built like a tank. I still have to put a gusset on the receiver arm and I’m going to put an alum. toolbox with a gen in it on the back. After seeing the cheaply made $6,400 ones I decided to build my own.Custom built swivel wheel trailer * This post was edited 04/15/12 05:20pm by Billieg2 * In my life I’ve spent my money on women, booze, Harleys, guitars and traveling, the rest I just wasted… 2007 Ford F-350 diesel/dually & Sunnybrook Titan KSRV 39-1 Toy hauler 5th wheel hauling my custom Harley hone eagle essex ontario canada Senior Member Joined: 11/18/2004 View Profile Offline Very nice work ,I sent this to a friend with the same dilema only he uses a BMW 🙂 2005 Volvo 670 singled freedomline 12 speed Newmar 34rsks 2008 Hensley trailersaver TSLB2H directlink brake controller -when overkill is cheaper- vladen Louisiana Senior Member Joined: 09/11/2010 View Profile Good Sam RV Club Member Offline Straight up your hitch weld to the cross piece at one point only makes me nervous Id have to add some angled pieces or reinforce it in some kind of manner Pushing that trailer around side to side seems like a lot of strain on that one joint Vlad’s busy workings All hope is gone fj12ryder Platte City, MO Senior Member Joined: 08/19/2003 View Profile I had a double wheel swivel wheel trailer and it most definitely did not cost $6800 dollars, and was quality construction, not cheaply made. Too much possibility of flex. You are going to need two connections to the back of the TV spaced apart about the distance between the frame rails. This tows fine. I have steering stabilizer shocks attached to arms I built on the front of the swivel assembly. Before I built them the wheels would get turned sideways when I went over a bump and the tire would come off of the road and would shock the whole thing straightening out. I made the connection for the stabilizers with a hitch pin so I could disconnect them If I needed to back up. My suspension units are the same as yours.
